CBS Seeking Gifted Kids for Primetime Game Show

Thursday, February 08, 2007 - by JMcIntosh - 787 Views - 4 Comments - Category: Fun and Interesting Stuff

I thought this opportunity sounded so fun and exciting that I couldn't wait to tell you about it.

CBS is currently in production on a new one-hour primetime game show for the CBS television network. According to a letter I received from the show's casting director, "In this one-hour unique and positive game show, one adult stakes his or her pride and reputation against a team of talented and gifted kids. Our purpose is to celebrate young people and education by making role models out of kids who are working hard to fulfill their educational goals.

"From geography to sports, history to movies, the kids will defend their intellectual capital against these grown up challengers, combining their academic talents to challenge the adult and send him or her packing."

The casting director went on to say, "We are looking for academically accelerated and gifted children nationwide to participate in our new kids game show. We are targeting well-rounded children of diverse backgrounds with unique interests."

If you know of a gifted child (grades 3–7) who might be interested in this opportunity, the following information will be helpful (each document is a PDF file and requires Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing):

This will be a BAD thing for gifted kids. One of the main problems with obtaining help for gifted kids in schools is that educators do not like to feel their charges are smarter than they are. This show is only going to reinforce this fear.

If a teacher doesn't like gifted children, I doubt a game show is going to change that one way or the other.

I say let's show folks what these kids can do and stop making them hide their talents just because others find it intimidating. It's like saying a great basketball player shouldn't be featured in public because their coach feels inadequate.

Unfortunately there's some truth to what Anon says. Our culture has for the last many years through TV and movies made fun of brainy people and somehow made them look crazy. We are paying the price now, with a decline militarily and economically. Most of our products are now made in China by hard working people and most of the higher quality engineering and design of software and other intellectual property is done in India by really brainy kids. All this happening when we were disrespecting our smart people, as well as in our arrogance, underestimating the Asians. I hope this show turns out to be like what ER did for the medical profession and try to put brains back in mainstream USA just like the generation which put man on the moon.

Personally, I think that shows have been bringing to light many talented children. Jay Leno and Oprah have both showcased gifted kids on their shows. Maybe this show will bring encouragement to educators. In a time when it seems that there is little hope left to make kids care about their future and pay attention in class, this can prove that the generation is not a lost cause. There are kids out there who strive to learn and for every gifted child showcased there are more waiting to be discovered!
