Carol Fertig I have been active in the education community for 37 years and involved in gifted education for the past 18 years. At various times I have been a classroom teacher, gifted education teacher, consultant, writer, editor, you name it. I live in Colorado, but also spend a fair amount of time in Chicago. I have two grown boys: one in Colorado and one in California. In my spare time I enjoy skiing, mountain biking, and golfing. I also like to read, go to plays, and watch foreign movies. Chess is the gymnasium of the mind - Blaise Pascal

Are you looking for an excellent extracurricular activity for your school? One that will really excite and draw kids while improving their minds? Think chess clubs. At one school where I worked, parents started a before and afterschool chess club and it was one of the most popular extracurricular activities available. Kids not only learned strategies and practiced chess during club time; they also went on to compete at various levels with one child going all the way to nationals.
